Liniments are liquid or semisolid preparations meant for application to the unbroken skin with friction.
Liniments usually contain counterirritant like turpentine or methyl salicylate.
Liniments should never be applied to the skin area that are broken or burned.
Turpentine liniment :-
Formula :-
Soft soap - 75g
Camphor - 50g
Turpentine oil - 650ml
Purified water - 225ml
It contains 65% v/v of turpentine oil.
Procedure :-
Soft soap is mixed with a portion of purified water and camphor is dissolved in freshly rectified turpentine oil.
Camphor solution is added to the soap mixture with trituration until a thick creamy emulsion is formed.
Purified water is then added to produce the required volume and mixed.
Storage :-
In well-closed containers.
Use :-
Counter irritant and rubefacient.
